George Bentham — Some account of him.
Sir,
It was but t'other day that upon my Nephew putting
into my hand the letter with which you have honored him. I knew of
his having addressed any one to you. I owe it to you, as well as to
myself and him, to inform you that the contents of that letter of his,
were, as they still continue to be, altogether unknown to me, otherwise
than from what, as above, you say of it, and from the fact of my having
put into his hands, the Bills in question, saying at the same time, that I
knew not whether any observations on them from me, had been looked
for; but that, at any rate, I was too much pressed for time to be able to read
them, but and that, if any observations occurred to him, the communication of which, to you
afforded, presented any prospect of being of any use, the candour and urbanity, by
which on such occasions you had been so eminently distinguished, would
secure to them a favorable reception. This young man, with his three
sisters and their father and mother Sir Samuel and Lady Bentham, are
the only relations, I have any knowledge of. His age is 26: a few months
