Was there some stipulation for the cession of some
islands to the order? enquired M<hi rend="underline">r C. — Yes Cyprus &
Rhodes were mentioned. They formerly claimed the Negropont
& the Bailiwick of the Morea & I imagine it
was believed the British Government would consent to
their re establishment, on their quietly giving up all claim
to Malta, which we hold with a flaw in the title — they
its former possessors & heirs never having consented to its
cession — Mr C. looked exceedingly surprised & obviously
checked some rising feeling.
