1824 Feb. 21
I.B. to Hon. Leicester Stanhope Greece.
21st Feby 1824.
I have just learnt from Blaquiere, two facts
which are highly interesting to me. One is, that on some
occasion or other Collocotroni had expressed a wish
that a Son of his, a boy of about 14 could go to visit England,
I suppose for education. If so it be, I will
take him and put him to Hill's School at my own
expense, and if you can continue to manage the matter Collocotroni
is exceedingly rich
— you who manage all matters, and in the best manner
possible, this shall be your sufficient warrant.
According to Blaquiere, he is a clever boy, and though
so young has accompanied his father to the field.
It seems to me, that for producing and keeping up
amity between the civilians on the one part, & the
military on the other, this would be a stroke of
capital importance, and the sooner you can contrive
to strike it, the better, and with him or after
him, you may send any other, between 12 and 14
or a trifle older. They should have acquired in their
own country, some of the ideas belonging to that
country to form a standing comparison, with the
ideas belonging to this country that by means of
the comparison they may be the better able to be of
use when they go back.
