1824 March 14 2

but in any case, if the proposal be relished
by those whom it concerns, might it not be of
use, that if the Commission be given to O. & L. as
above, it should be known to them that the suggestion
came from me? To these men, the men
where you are, might of course, add for this
purpose, or substitute, any and as many others
as they pleased: but on my own part, I see not
at present any reason for such change: the business
might suffer by it and no advantage presents
itself to my view as likely to be gained by
it. They are hot and suspicious, and full of
complaints quite ungrounded I believe agt
their best friend Bq. but as yet they seem
kindly disposed as well as full of the most
extraordinary respect as towards me. Any thing
they disapprove in my Code, they will give their
reason against, I mine for. This they cannot
object to. Having no sort of right on no occasion
whatever do I ever take upon me to dictate, and so I
hope, whether let the parts in which we disagree in
opinion be ever so extreme and numerous, peace
and amity will continue.
