resolved to rely on their own energies, for the purpose of recovering their entire independence, and
have adopted such wise and well organized measures as cannot fail, under Providence, in obtaining the
most complete success. Ample Powers of Attorney have been granted to His Excellency General
Count De Wuits by various Cypriot Chiefs, jointly with myself, authorizing him to treat with any
Foreign power for a loan, at such a price as he shall be able to procure, for the liberation of Cyprus;
by virtue of which Powers we have legally pledged, as well our extensive private property in, as the
Public Revenues of that island, and have duly constituted and appointed His Excellency our true
and lawful Agent, under our respective signs manual.

Gentlemen, I pass over for the most part, the ignoble and pusilanimous attacks on my
illustrious friend, by your "Honorary Secretary" Mr. JOHN BOWRING, as too contemptible to be more
than merely noticed! for to insinuate against a distinguished General Officer, that he holds in reality
no such rank! to asert unblushingly of an individual of well known, ancient, and noble ancestry
"That he is a person" calling himself the Count DE WUITS, &c. &c." carries on the face of it, its
own poison and antidote; and only finds a parallel in absurdity, in the alleged profound discovery,
that I was the only one (as if there were more than one) of the Exarchos of Cyprus!!! But, Gentlemen, a
letter has lately been published by Mr. BOWRING, which calls for more serious notice, inasmuch, as
it dares to designate the holy object in contemplation, for the deliverance of my beloved country from
its present state of degradation, as a fraud.

For such a foul and incomprehensible a calumny, we throw ourselves on the clemency of
your Committee, in preference to pursuing other measures against your Honorary Secretary, whom
we believe to have published the Letter dated 12th March, without your concurrence.

With every good wish for the prosperity and happiness of the inhabitants of the Morea, and
my humble prayers that the God of Armies may grant to them and the other Grecian States, a complete
triumph over their Infidel oppressors,

I have the honour to subscribe myself,
Gentlemen, your most obedient Servant,
JOANNIKOS, EXARCHOS.

15th March, 1824.
