commenced. The pills were then discontinued, and
the quantity of the mercurial preparation taken inwardly
a little diminished. In about a month, a
change for the better was susceptible, and in about
two months relief was very considerable. I found,
however, that my operator had little or no hope of
effecting a perfect cure in my instance, though within
that time he had effected a cure in many similar
cases, several of which he mentioned. He said, unless
the disorder should grow worse again, he sees
no further use in my continuing the mercurial
preparations. But he recommended the employing a
very soft flesh-brush, such as he produced to me,
in rubbing the parts affected from 10 to 15 minutes
every 24 hours. I did so; but the first or second time
when I had given but a few touches and those very gentle
ones, and a very bad effect ensued, composed of soreness
and even actual pain which lasted for hours.
After this, it was sometimes better, sometimes worse,
and when it was worse, I every now and then
made application of the external lotion, discontinuing,
if not immediately, at any rate sooner or later, the draught.
