Meantime, the itching would cease during the
greatest part of the day : but when it appeared, a
slight contact applied for the purpose of relief had
the effect of exasperating it for a considerable length
of time, and left behind it a slight soreness which
made itself sensible whenever the parts were moved by motion of the body the skin was .
After every application made in medical view had
ceased, nothing being done but now and then a
little gentle friction for momentary relief, it very
gradually kept growing better and better. In
this state, I knew not how it happened that I took
to giving the parts some slight touches with a very
hard brush, such as is used for cleaning the
head instead of a small tooth comb. To my no
small surprize, instead of producing permanently
a bad effect, this treatment produced a good one.
Instead of producing, as at first, a no more than momentary
relief, at the expense of a longer continued
repetition exacerbation, it now produces not only the momentarily
pleasant sensation, but does every thing but completely
remove the itching which thereafter never fails to
