1820. Decr. 28th
Ed. Blaquiere Paris to J.Bowring Freeman's Court Cornhill

"Rue des Moulins nº 26. Decr. 6th

"Amigo del Corazon!

"Your three obliging favours of the 27th Octr that
"brought by the amiable Miss Clarke sans date, and the one written
"from Q.S.P. on the 21st. Ultº. are now before me: the more I look
"at their agreeable and instructive contents, the more bitterly do I
"reproach myself for having remained silent so long. My best
"excuse of this [I hope unusual neglect] will be found in the
"numerous difficulties that have attended on getting a lodging:
"the constant occupation in running about to look after one;
"and, to conclude, my anxiety to serve Mora with the good people
"here! More reasons for my silence might be added, but
"knowing you to be indulgent to the faults of your friends, I
"am led to hope the above will be sufficient. If, however, I
"acknowledge that it was my wish and duty to address you
"before, permit me to claim the negative merit of not having
"suffered one word of your communications to be lost on me;
"I have re-perused them with the attention they deserve, and
"I am sure the "Pythoress", as she is emphatically designated
"by one of my correspondents, will not accuse me of flattery
"when I say, that, in thinking yourself, you possess the rare qualification
"of making others think also. In reply to that part
"of your first letter, which related to the fact of my hasty scrawls
"for the Newspapers, I shall merely add, that I feel perfectly
"satisfied, as to your kind exertions, perhaps I should regret
"their neglected existence still more, were not that the state
"of the country has long furnished so much matter for reflection
"as to have very properly excluded all foreign questions.
"If what i sent home, tended to afford Mr B. and yourself a
"moments amusement, my trouble is more than repaid. On
"the other hand, I feel satisfied at the recollection of having
"fulfilled my promise to Mora and Simpson, who favoured
"me with the news fo the express purpose of being transmitted
"to England. When I reflect on the services you have rendered
"Mr.B or rather humanity, in prevailing on your friends of
"the Cortes to come forward, I am half inclined to envy you the honor
"you have thus reaped! But the fact is, and I have taken the
"liberty of hinting it to him, we have both a right to be perfectly
"satisfied with our share of the glory, that may arise from his
"labours, in the cause of Spain, there is little doubt but his powers
"would have been called into action under any circumstances,
"inferior links were, however, in some degree, necessary to connect
"the chain, and if you had not been at hand to provide
"those in the Cortes, it is more than probable Mora would
"have experienced many difficulties in calling the attention of
"the nation so effectually to our venerable friend as he has.
