Portugal Carvalho about J.B. to Rocha Extracts

J. Be to J. Bo, 14 July 1821. Yesterday I sent Richard to D.r
Rocha to ask whether he had any news from Portugal, and
whether he had any thing to say to you. He said he had a
letter from Carvalho, in which there was a good deal about
me: that he was at that time too much occupied to give a
translation of it, but that he would call on me the
morrow at 3 O' Clock, bring the letter with him, and read the
passages to me in English. Instead of calling at that hour, long
before which I should have been home to receive him, he
called at 1/2 after 1. when I was out upon my antijentacular
walk. He preached to Jack something, of which the fair copy
is as above. It appears therefore that at that time he
had no advice of the receipt of my letters in answer to the
communication from the Cortes. What there is, however, has
(you see) no ill aspect.

Extract of a Letter from Mr. Carvalho to Dr. Rocha 8th June 1821.

"I am very glad of what you told me about the illustrious
"Mr Bentham.(a) I have only read his works as they
"were translated into French: but what I most admire, is-the
"Tacties of Public Assemblies, where he shows his sound judgment,
"and the practical knowledge he possesses of mankind.

"I do not think you should be the Translator of Mr_
"Bentham's works, because, besides the time it would cost you,
"you would not profit much by it. The best thing will be
"for you to be the Reviser: as you are coming,(b) we will
"talk together upon the subject. The Cortes have written to Mr_
"Bentham. I have sent you the letter. Is it perchance lost?

"The newspapers are on their way

Notes (a) Alluding to D.r Rocha's expression of Mr Bentham's intention
of writing to M.r Carvalho
(b) D.r Rocha having, just before this letter was written,
been made Historiographer of Portugal, M.r Carvalho considers
his acceptance of the appointment, and consequently
his immediate return to Portugal, as certain. But D.r R remains as
yet undetermined.
