Telulistic, partly intellectual partly moral, Pficence
Fortitude is modification of Prudence, Probity and
Counter-agent to Prudence when not counteracted by Probity or Beneficence

Good-breeding is negative beneficence in small matters of continual occurrence.
Towards superiors and equals it is recommended by a more considerate Prudence; towards inferiors by a more
remote.

Field of Ethics — its divisions.

Ch. Prudence — probity, beneficence — under one or other
of these heads denominations are comprised it may be seen, every thing every human quality
that bears conduces to human happiness — every thing — or at least every thing which taking for the standard of these virtues
conduciveness to well-being, ought to bear the name of
virtue

Prudence probity and beneficence — the Trinity of the
moral world.

To these and these alone should belong the superior title of cardinal ones virtues.

On this view of the matter by these three qualities
taken together the whole field of Ethics is covered: and
Whatsoever is capable of being to any useful purpose use
delivered observed in the subject of Ethics will consent in
motivation concerning the application to be made of these
virtues.

Hence what can be
usefully delivered in Ethics
will be instruction how
to apply these virtues —

Meantime [these are not — much indeed do they far indeed are they from
want of being all the qualities which items articles that are
most commonly inserted in the catalogue spoken of in the character of virtues.] Of
Under the name of virtues many not inconsiderable
is the number of those other qualities, which under
the same general appellation are wont to be placed
on a level with these three.

Supposing This being the case, it follows, that,
if by these three virtues in the catalogue character of all comprehensive
ones the whole field of morals is completely
covered — what follows is — that to one or more of these
three all these others are, all of them, in some
way to other reducible. resolvable.
