Vanity objection
The quality of Vanity is attributed to a man
in the joint proportion of the value at which he appears
to set upon the pleasures of the popular or moral sanction
in so far as they are considered as flowing from the esteem of other men
sanction, and of the openness manifestness of the exertions employed by
by which he endeavours to obtain them employed by him in the pursuit of them

The quality of Pride is attributed to a man
in proportion to in the direct ratio of the appearance which he seems to
possess quantity of the esteem esteem and respect which he considers
himself as about to receive at the hands of other
men, the degree of assurance with which he expects to
visit the rec experience the effects of it, in the inverse ratio
of the need demand which he regards himself as having of it,
and in the inverse ratio of the esteem which he feels
for them, and the degree of respect the esteem his esteem which [accordingly]
he entertains for therm, and of the respect which he feels is
himself disposed in the habit of to testify in relation to them.
