Fortitude, what

On this occasion In what sort of action occasion does by what means in what case is a man considered
as entitling himself to the praise of fortitude to the
denomination of a man of courage? Answer—In so
far as on the occasion of his exposing placing himself voluntarily
in a situation in which he stands will would stand exposed to be
subjected to suffer evil in some shape or other, viz. and in
particular to extinction death, to considerable bodily pain, or to both in one

Measure of its degree

In so far as he voluntarily and knowingly places
himself in any such situation, in proportion to the
magnitude of the danger i.e. what to him appears the magnitude
of the pain or the probability of the death — in that same
proportion is the quality of fortitude considered as belonging
to him.

merit — conducive
to self interest or
extra regarding do

This exposure, for the ultimate good of human society is it desirable that it should be
made? — {the answer will depend} on these circumstances
will the answer, it is believed, be found to depend. By
such exposure will his own interest well-being his own ultimate
interest — will that of such other persons whose
interests are in any respect at stake upon it be serve
upon the whole more likely to be served than deprived? Suppose these Supposing the two
interests to be incompatible? of which of which of
them is it desirable that it should give way? to which
of them is it desirable that the preference should be given, the
other being to the extent of such preference amount necessary for the purpose sacrificed:
