Logic or Ethics Ch. Causes of immorality

4

§.3 Religion misapplied

Nay but O yes (say some) happiness, even as you say — and
that human happiness — it is that, that affords the true and
only true standard of moral conduct — that which is in
the highest degree conducive to human happiness — that that is
to the greatest happiness of the greatest number — that is the
course of conduct which on every occasion is the most proper fit
to be pursued.

But to know on each particular occasion to know for knowing what course
of conduct is will be most conducive to human happiness there
is but one way and that is, to consult the will of God:
meaning the will of God as declared in the sacred scriptures
by Jesus and his followers.
