Logic or Ethics Ch. 1 Propriety Deontology
1
Ch. 1
Of Propriety, and its connection with {the principles of} Utility.
Even under the dominion of the principle of Utility
taken in the sense so often explained, the word utility
will not be has not been with its conjugates Useful and Usefulness [+]
[+] Useless and Uselessness
and Inutility
has not been found to be conveniently adapted to all every one of the occasions
in which application of the principle of utility
to practice comes may come to be made.
I. In some instances the expression will be apt to appear too
weak: not sufficiently expressive of the force of possessed
by the obligation which in those cases appears
to have place.
It is useless to commit murder, rape, or
it would be useful to prevent it: and so in regard to rape,
incendiarism and other acts which in respect of the magnitude
of the mischief to which they are apt to give birth,
are wont to be denominated and dealt with on the footing
of heinous crimes.— Against To any such application
of the word utility and or its conjugates, the mind of most
readers would be apt to recalistrate.
II. Another objection obstacle to the employing on the all-comprehensive employment of the word utility
on all occasions is, the decision which it will be seen to
involve in in relation to the question concerning the different principles in regard to
of morality morals the different sources of morality. The Upon the two
rival principles to that of utility, viz. asceticism and scholasticism
being a negative plan being on every occasion in which
it is employed being manifestly put, hence it is a consequence is — that to
any person to by whom in any instance the dominion of either
of
of those principles is
recognized, every proposition
in which it is
employed will be
apt to present itself
as inadmissible.
