Logic or Ethics Ch. Propriety
3
II In respect of impartiality the usefulness of this term
presented itself as not less manifest. Of itself it decides
not between any less or more of the three systems: itself with equal
propriety it may be employed in the exposition development and application
of any one of them. Unless it be in respect
of the coolness of it, a property which has just been spoken
to, neither the ascetic sentimental nor the sentimentalist ipsi-digitist will be it is supposed
apt to take objection to it will be apt to regard as
inapplicable to his purpose. Of whatsoever he disapproves
of he will be readily ready enough to recognize
the impropriety: of whatsoever he approves of, the propriety.
By these words the simple and absolute fact viz. that the
sort of act to which they are respectively applied are
respectively the objects of his approbation, will may in a manner
not likely to be unsatisfactory, be expressed stand: and this which
item, whatsoever degree of intensity he may feel himself
disposed to give to the expression of his affection, the language
is not wanting in words capable of serving for the usually employed in the
expression of it.
In On all these cases occasions the judgement to which expression
is meant to be given is accordingly expressed: expressed and thus
simple and purely, without interaction given of the either of two
collateral matters: viz. the affection with which that judgement
has been is accompanied, or the ground in which it has been
formed.
