Answer
1. In respect to the alledged competition as referred to between self-regarding
and extra-regarding interest, true it is that between the
two interests thus denominated, a strong and almost
continual competition has been planted does really exist by the hands of
nature.

But on the other hand what is the less true, is that into the composition
of this a man's self-regarding interest enters on every occasion a quantity
of extra-regarding interest, and that in more accounts a variety of shapes
than one. In other words, on most not to
say on all occasions a man has an interest — a
self-regarding interest — in promoting and accommodating his conduct
to the interest — the self-regarding interest of others,
and in so far as a self regarding interest of this description
has place, it operates acts in alliance with his extra-regarding
interest, and as a check upon the force of that self-regarding
interest operating which operates in other shapes.

Here or lower down show that what the deontologist has to do is to
show how extra-regarding becomes self-regarding interest.
