§.1 Interest & duty — how related

Interest by which moralists are less interest talk about duty: exercise of pure
reputation of virtue — piety their false dictas exposed, dictas not
coinciding with interest

Ch. 1
§.1. Relation between interest and duty.

In the works extant on this subject, the practice has generally
at least if not universally has been to state from first to last
what, according to the author, is the duty of the individual in
relation to each subject or occasion: what is his duty, and
this without any explicit and direct if any reference to
his interest to what may be his interest: [ulurar either
if it can not be and said with truth that what is not a man's interest
is not his duty, it may at any rate be said that unless
in his eyes, at the moment of for action, it is at any rate is not his interest,
in vain has it been rendered or endeavoured to be in vain will be it be said it is to be his duty.
rendered his duty to say that it is his duty is but idle
talk.]

Idle as it is of this sort is the has been hitherto the
general complection of the talk delivered on this part of the
field of art and science. It is your duty to do so and
so, it is your duty to abstain from doing so and so.
In this strain the author goes on, and travelling all the while
very much at his ease. How comes it so to say duty to
do so and so? such put to of the author this question, his answer
will be if he answers truly and explicitly — because I bid
you to do so and so: because such is my opinion — and
such accordingly is my will. Well but suppose I do my conduct
does not conform itself to this will of yours — what then? Oh, you
will do very wrong, says he. You will do very wrong: i.e. I declare my that I disapprove
disapprobation
disapprobation of your
conduct, and in this
disapprobation I expect
to be joined by other
men.
