Deontology Ch. 1

H Simple in the extreme the means by which
the desideratum a work thus extensive is accomplished. With the addition
of the adverb or partical negation not a single word —
the word ought — suffices to the purpose. With this
word at the end of his pen traversing the field in all directions
and as if with a commission from above chalks
out every where & for every man his path of duty

No less economical than simple is this scheme
of instruction in all such articles as proof on reasoning
all expense is saved by it. On this occasion you
ought to do so and so — on that occasion you ought
not to do so and so is the teachers will being throughout
in so far as depends upon him converted into a law
and from this law with the instruction which it
conveys what you learn — and it is all that any
body can learn — is — that on the occasion in question
such is his will & pleasure.

When by a self neglected elected legislature of this sort
this code of moral law is laid down strong is the
propensity to severity to the multiplication of obligations:
nor is it easy to say where any check
to it is to be found. Proportioned to the multiplicity &
rigour of obligations is the respect he promises
to himself: he promises himself not altogether
without cause. How ill grounded soever, such however
is their assumption which the weakness of human
nature is ever ready to take up: if his own practise
were not conformable — throughout conformable
to these his rules he would not thus commit himself
for upon his practise condemnation would thus be
passed by his own rules. Altogether weak is the ground
upon which this presumption stands. Many in comparison
