Deontology Theoretical

Passions
Envy & Jealousy

Envy & Jealousy seem to require to be
spokin of together, both of them bear reference to
some good & to some other person considered in respect
of it.

Envy supposes the good to be in possession of
that other person: jealousy supposes it not to be
in his possession. I (suppose) am the jealous person:
you the person who is the object of my jealousy: jealousy as towards
you may equally have place in my breast whether
I am in possession or not of the good in question or not.

Be the degree in either case what it may
envy & jealousy agree in this; namely that they
have suffering — evil in the shape of suffering — for
their inseparable accompanyment. The consequence is
to repress the emotion as far as may be if possible
even to suppress or prevent it altogether, is on every
occasion among the dictates of prudence.

Supposing the emotion, the affection, the passion,
whichever be the name applied to it —suppose it
to remain in the breast tha in which it has been excited,
in an unproductive state, without giving rise to acts
productive of any effect on the feelings of any other person —
on this supposition, benevolence has no application to it.
Suppose it about to produce or liable to produce acts
exercising a maleficent influence on the feelings of
any other person or persons, here then the repressing it as far
as may be, is among the dictates of benevolence.
