Self-regarding prudence — its relation to taste

Self regarding prudence is the sacrifice of
the present to the future: of a present good
to an expected future good of superior or supposed
superiour value. For the elements of value
as applied to good & evil, to pleasure & pain,
see Introd<hi rend="superscript">e</hi> Chap . . —

Suppose In the present
supposing that alone at stake, there
exists not any demand for — any room
for the exercise of self regarding prudence:
the choice belongs exclusivily to the dominion
of taste.

Shall I have beef to day for dinner
or mutton? The price the same & expence of
cooking the same, here is no room for the exercise
of prudence in respect of the future; whichever
choice I make the consequences are the same.
The choice here belongs exclusively to the
dominion of taste.

But beef being at a certain
price suppose mutton to be to a certain amount
dearer. Here unless my pecuniary circumstances
be such as to make the choice practically
speaking matter of entire indifference here comes
room for the exercise of prudence — If by choosing
mutton instead of beef I were to put it out of
n to have a full meal tomorrow or any
other day here unless the longing for the mutton were
to a certain degree intense here would be imprudence:
prudence requires rejection of the mutton adherence
to the beef. but suppose for a messmate I have
my wife, she in a family way — a fit of longing is
upon her & the object of the longing is the mutton to
the exclusion of the beef. In this case benevolence certainly
prudence certainly the a
the expence of part of the
next days meal may
here decide in favour of the
mutton.
