Self-regarding Prudence

sense

§.

S What regard those physical desires by the gratification of
which in so far as the welfare of no other person is
one way or the other affected by the gratification afforded given
or sought to be given to them the dictates of self-regarding
prudence, are to be learned from the Medical and
the Economist rather than from the Moralist: to those authorities
therefore they shall here be left.

On these as on most all other occasions the option has
between the pleasure of the moment has when so ever and
the more or less probable pain or loss of pleasure which in
the remainder course of the rest of life may be the consequence of it
