self-contradictory propositn. or any number of such propositns.?
When it happens to a man to have a pain whether in
the head, or the great toe, or any intermediate part of the
body is the seat of it, is it in the nature of the case
that by saying to himself or any body else, pain is no evil,
any the slightest diminutn. shd. be effected in it?

To show how virtue
contributes to happss.
of use this done ever &
anon by JB.

As to virtue to have shown in how many
different ways or though it were but one way, it contributes
as it really does to happiness this would have been
of some use and might have been of great use. Accordingly
it is an operatn. wh. whh. Mr. Bentham has been ever &
anon occupying himself. But to say that virtue is of itself
to produce & maintain happiness whatsoever be a man's
conditn. in other respects what possible use can there
be in givg. utterance to a position so directly in the

a definitn. to the word virtue or rather an expositn. for by so short
a species of documt. as that designated by the word definitn.
no adequate concept. can be given, this wd have been somethg.
& this is what the great. happs. prince. will enable a man to do.
But if it happens to you to see a man suffering under a
fit of the gout, or the stone, or the tic douloureux,
informing him that he is happy or that if he is not it is for
want of virtue, wd this be any relief to him? wd it not
rather be a cruel mockery, an insult?

This nonsense talked
by the Stoics: Stoics who.

This was the sort of trash whh. a set of men
used to amuse themselves with talking while talking
backwards & forwards in colonnades called porches:
that is to say the the Stoics from Stoa the greek
name for a porch. In regard to these the general
notn. has been that compared with our contemporaries
in the same ranks they were generally
speaking a good sort of men: and assuredly
in all times good sort of men talking all their
lives long nonsense in an endless variety of shapes
never have been wanting: but that from talking
nonsense in this or any other shape they have in
any way or degree the betters, this is what does not follow.
