In apposition to happiness
principle is justice, a
subordinate of ipsedixit
principle. Assumptions
1. that justice is the proper
standard 2. that so
and so is one of its dictates.

An indirect but not the less operative mode of appositn.
to the greatt happs. prince. is the setting up under some other
name indeed under any other name & making reference to in
the character of an end in view or say instrumt. of guidance
or if the appellatn. be not too familiar directing lost
any appellative by whh. reference is made & homage paid to
this sole defensible instrumt. of guidance to human conduct :
such for exe. is the word justice : another subordinate
of the ipse dixit prince. The word justice being set
at the "head & front of the offence-"committing work.
Thereabouts come one after another strings of directns., precepts,
mandates, call them whh. you will - saying in effect
& substance to every body who will read- on the occasn.
in questn. do so & so for this is what is required by
justice. On each occasn. here are two assumptns. made;
made in the genuine ipse dixit style : assumptn. the
first justice is the proper & of efft. sufficient standard of reference.
Assumptn. the 2nd. this is of the number of the dictates of that
same principle: assumptions (need it be said?) both
of them unsupported by assumt. - both of them, in one
word, as the phrase is, gratuitous.

Of an act of insubordinatn. not to say rebeln. or high
treason against the sovereignty of this only legitimate all-ruling
principle an exemplificatn. at this moment presents
itself in the shape & title assumed by Mr. Godwin's
"Political Justice" & if the memory of the writer of these
pages has not deceived itself some atonemt. has
since been made for the offence by rhe imputatns.
cast upon it by certain errors in matters of
detail wh. whh. the work has been charged. Into the
validity of these charges it is neither our business
nor our intentn. to make in the present instance
an inquiry. What is more to the purpose
& on that score as well as in itself if we do not deceive
ourselves more useful is to bring to view the relatn.
whh. the import of the word justice presents itself as
bearing to the greatt. happs. prine. - an indicatn. by
whh. alone two useful operatns. can be performed;
namely in the manifestation a clear explanation
of the import of the word & manifestation made of
of the allegiance due form it.
