History of the principle of Utility otherwise called
the Greatest-happiness principle — the history

Not altogether void of instruction or interest
may be the history of this principle, and the difference different
of the appearances descriptions under which worn by it which at different stages of
its progress. [Neither under the pen of Phaedrus Horace nor
under that of Horace Phaedrus did it present itself under wear the
imposing garb of a principle presiding over the whole
expanse of the most important among arts and sciences:
it presented itself in this respect upon a footing
resembling
that of the aphorism by which ideas of all
other sorts are stated as having their source in the origin in the pure
