Hume's Essays First
mention of utility as a
principle
III. Epoch the third Year 1742. Year in which David
Hume's Essays made their first appearance. Contained in this
year was the first moment at which it came out in the
garb and with the stile and note of a principle. Ambiguous
however and variable on this occasion was the
aspect character under which on this occasion it the idea of usefulness presented itself:
13
Used merely as synonymous
to conduciveness
to an end
sometimes as having special connection with happiness being synonymous to conduciveness to happiness
but at other times as being synonymous to conduciveness
to the end or purpose proposed, whatsoever may
happen to be that same end or purpose. According inanimate
are among the subject matters in which it is then spoken of as
capable of being found inh: in , re a machine, in
or another place a budding, in a third place a piece of furniture
"a vestment, a house." II
14
No intimation of happiness
as connected
with the idea
On no occasion is the idea of
any express intimation given, that the idea of happiness is inseparably
connected with the idea signified by it. Incidentaly
it is true do the words pleasure and pain on that occasion
present themselves: but no where in the character the are pleasures
and exemptions from pains presented to view [in the character of]
as the elements of which and which alone the aggregate designated by the word happiness is composed.
15
No mention of pleasures
and pains exemptions
from pain as ingredients
of happiness
Pleasures pains desires emotions affections passions interests, virtues, vices
and vices and talents and other psychological entities are brought together as in a public like so many
walk Equestrians in the ride called Rotten Row: but the whole group
in a state of the most perfect confusion and without any attempt
to shew in what relationship they stand to one another: [talents
are expressly stated as scarce distinguishable from virtues.]
all these objects undefined and indistinct, dancing before the
eye like atoms in the sunshine
