1. Purely self-regarding.
Conduct of the thoughts—By thoughts are meant on this occasion
such only as do not lead to action: for as to those do, they will
find their place under the head of actions. No men to whom it
does not at times happen to have something to do with his thoughts
without having any thing to do with action.—
On these occasions a short precept or two speaks for itself. Keep
out as effectually as you can all painful thoughts, Call up to view
such as are pleasurable: those by preference which are made
preferable pleasurable.
So much as to the end: no as to the means.

Saving exceptions to the contrary
