His estimate of the living agricultural power, ("force vivante
"agricole
") of the two countries, is as 372 France, to 321 England;
and, of manufacturing power. 63 France, to 72 England
435 France, to 393 England

The manufacturing power of England is on this calculation,
certainly rated a less than half its reality. But, supposing
the calculation to be correct, if the same proportion of power to
population existed alike in both countries, and the power of France
was represented by 435, that of England would be only 290.
If England be represented by 393, that of France ought to be 590.

Of physical inanimate power ("forces inanimes"), Mr. Dupin
estimates the proportion to be, as 52 France, to 208 England.
Wide reference to the amount of population, if the force of
France be 52, that of England should be 35. If that of England
be 208, – that of France should be 312.

Taking in a period of 46 years, the increase of power in
the United Kingdom, as compared with that of France, he
considers as 638 to 217.

At the time in which Mr. Dupin wrote (1827), he calculated
that the Revenue produced in France, was three fold the power of
human production, and sevenfold in England.

But, notwithstanding the impediments to intercourse which
the interruptions of War, and the exclusive system of fiscal
regulation have introduced, it appears by the returns of the French
Customhouse that, in the year 1830, the Importations from England,
including Bullion, amounted to an eighth part of the whole
Importations
