In While differing in opinion from others – & giving expression to that
difference – let care be taken to avoid unnecessary the appearance of
personal attack. And this may be accomplished by the
modification use of those forms of expression which present some secure
you been against apt seeming personally to assume a hostile position.
You have, for example occasion to convey your disapproval of
certain opinions held by another. Now there is no need of
bringing upon yourself the sort of undivided hostility which may probably
result from your direct & violent onset against those opinions which for aught
you know may be as deeply rooted in your opponent's mind
as the contrary are in your own mind. Instead therefore if
taking the part ground, as it were of personal offence, – you
may represent yourself to be one of a number who have not
been able to see the weight of the arguments alledged in
favor of your opponent's doctrine – that if the doctrine has been met by
such & such difficulties, – & so on. This that Or you may put your
own opinions into the mouth of another – & by using a class
of men indefinely – or any determinate body of men – for
the avoidance of that ever clashing of individual opinion, sort of personal jousting, which
is so frequently painful to both a source of annoyance to both combatants – Such a form of expression as
"Some say" – will break or "the opponents of this opinion say" bunt the breast sharp edge of the controversy
& the subject be one in which particular classes for unarmed
the terms of dissent will be sufficiently conveyed by a
phrase like this – "Yet there are lawyers who contend it" –
or "But some Divines argue" – & so on – with reference to
the special case before you
And this has many uses – It leaves
