3. Information giving, when
apt able to give offence. 1. Where it involves the supposition
of general ignorance or general inferiority in
the seale of knowledge on the part of the person to whom
it is given; or relative ignorance in relation to some
special subject of knowledge which, for by some special
reasoncause he ought stands bound to be possessed of it: 2. Where
it involves a supposition of a supported consciousness of
superiority, general or special, on the part of the speaker
with relation to the person spoken to as before.
N.B. In all these cases, a circumstance supported, is — that,
with reference to the speaker, the person spoken to is in point of
general estimation
superior, decidedly superior,
or at least equal; or
if inferior, not so decidedly
inferior as to warrant
any such superiority of

assumptions as above.
But beyond this case the communicating information cannot
wither the limits of the offence — for no person is so knowing
