they more especially concern. Those which emanate form the
French Custom House, were, under the authority of the
Minister of Finances prepared by the Director General.
(M Greterin) who on many occasions favoured us with personal
explanations and with the expression of opinions which
derived additional value from his Official situation. In France, the
Custom House, like every other department of receipt is
concentrated in and responsible to the Ministry of Finances.
Wherever it was deemed desirable, the original Books were
laid before us, and on all occasions, the autograph Correspondence
with the different Custom Houses. The different
systems of Official valuation in the two Countries, the
irregular and contraband trade, and of the incongruities of
dates have necessarily prevented the establishment of very
exact comparisons. For example, the accounts of the
English Custom House represent the importations from
France for the year ending 5th January 1830 as £2.317.786
at the exchange (see appendix B.) of 25 Francs gives... Fr. 57.944.650
While the Official Accounts of the French Custom House
for the Year ending 31st December 1829, give... 61.973.535
