1825. Augt.
Penal Code

Ch III. Offences – Person & Rep.
§ 3. Challenging.

A case in which, love of reputation stands dearest
of any other motive is that where the challenger has regards
himself as having sustained at the hands of the
challengee a wrong, of which if not resented in this way
loss of reputation is an apprehended consequence: call the
challenge in this case a reputation- defensive challenge.

Another ease in which the love of reputation may
be considered as standing clear from any other motive, is
that in which the challenge has its origin in the desire of
obtaining the reputation of personal courage. In this case
the expectation is that the challenge will be accepted.

A case in which it may happen, the love of reputation
as above, has a place or at any rates that it does not operate
as the principal motive is that in which it is
grounded on the supposition that the challenge will not
be accepted, in which case the motive may be, the desire
of extorting at the expense of the challengee, or anyone with
whom he is particularly connected profit on some shape to
the challenger or any person with whom he is particularly
connected, in this case challenge is employed as an instrument of extortion.
