The probability therefore, seems to be, and that a
very high one, that, were this the only means
of repression employed, delinquency in this
shape would in comparison with what it is
at present, be extremely rare. But this is not
all. Every man being assured, that, in case
of sucess in return, that is to say by the
slaughter or wounding of his antagonist in return for this success
the utter ruin of his own fortune will be the
result and the correspondent enrichment
of the persons family dear to that same antagonist,
will be the result. What can reasonably
be expected to be the number of those,
who will engage in such an enterprise,
compared with the number of those who
engage in it, at present? Surely, extremely
small. But suppose a man actually to
engage in it, what is the consequence?
Will the invitation be accepted? No such
thing. The motives, by which, in the
present state of things, acceptance is
produced, will by the proposed new state
of things be entirely done away; by nonacceptance,
no humiliation, will the challengee see about to fall upon
him. Humiliation yes - humiliation will indeed fall; but the person
on whom it will fall, will be not as now, the challengee, but the challenger
