1827. July 10
Penal Code

Ch. Homicide
§. Duelling

While thus employed in what on the part of a man of quality was the
principle business of life, the same talents, such
as they were, were employed, on various occasions,
to various incidental and subordinate
purposes: to the deciding the question of rectitude
as between conflicting opinions, instead of the
modern test called a bet or wager, to the deciding
the comparative attitude in the scale of
beauty between two persons of the female sex,
so the deciding between two competitors for the
good graces favours of the same female: for deciding the
question as between the presence and absence
of veracity on this or that occasion on the part
of the same male: and to crown the whole, to
decide the question between right and wrong in
all causes, as well non-penal and penal, (ecclesiastical
always excepted) in the instance of wh. a more unerring mode of decisions was employed
in preference.
