26 March 1815 I Chrestom. Teloph. Grounds of Priority

6. [Concrete] From the a Latin word, which signifies grown
up along with: viz, along with the subject which is in question, whatever
it be: it is used in contradistinction to the wordabstract, derived
from a Latin word, which signifies drawn drawnout from: viz.
from the subject in question, as above. Looking at An orange,
Iis behold in it has certainfor example, has a certain figure, whereby, in conjunction
with a certain colour, it stands distinguished from
all other fruits and as well as from all other objects of all sorts.
TakingIf Take into consideration this or that individual orange, the
impressions ideas, of presented by the figure and colour, whereby it
stands distinguished not only from other fruits but even from
other oranges - from other obj fruits of the same kind - these are
concrete ideas: for, they grew up, as it were, together, in the mind, out
of the individual object, by which they are existed and produced:
they are amongbeing the elements, out of which the aggregate conception
of andafforded and presented to us by that individual object, is formed.
The orange being no longer in out of sight, now, of the gu figure and
colour, observed by us in that individual orange, let us consider
so much such parts or resemblances<add>or appearances</add>as are to be found, as it appears to us, someone possessed as us by all
by all in all other oranges, as well as in by that one? The idea thus formed
is an abstract one:idea: it being a picture, drawn up, as it were, from the
aggregate idea obtained, as above, from the individual object.-
Being abstracted, and slept off, from the individual strike, at
and thereupon planted in the mind, it has then taken root,
and acquired a sort of separate and independent existence
Without thinking any more of that individual orange in particular,
in if oranges in general, or so much as of fruit in general,
let us now considertake into consideration figure at large and colourat large:: Here appellation are included
not only figure, and
colour, but smell, taste,
and many others: it is
therefore abstract in a
still higher degree.

at one jump, the mind has arrived at an idea, not only abstract,
but vastly more abstract than in the case last mentioned.
Instead of figure and colour let us now lay sensible qualities. Under this application
