so called
Principal use - See
fumbling experience
—
If a system of logarithm is exhibtited and is the form of a
curve, an indication of the practical use of any of this fiction ought
to be given
3. In another class of instances the existence of the field
are indubitably useful beyond question occasionally uselful
but without being constantly and every wherein every part of it necessary
This field is the field of Mechanics taken in the largest
sense in which that appellation is employed
In this field the most general extensive and plainly intelligible apprehensible
use in the same saving of what may
be called:fumbling: viz: experiment - no fresh experiment or
observation employed to ascertain some general
matter of fact which by calculation abo withoutalone
calculation grounded in existing experiments and observations
might without the need of fresh ones made
on purpose, have sufficed.
What a How great a massquantity of labour, and thereby
of the matter of wealth - and of time, and thereby
of the matter of life which might have have been saved
by mathematical calculation has been wasted in
fumbling - may be bot more easily imagined than
continued.
In this case too the field has belongs to that portion
of the field of mathematics which is common to algebra
and geometry
