To him it is not a matter of exultation but
of regret - not a pleasurable reflection but a peaceful one
part of this his view of the matter should be found
correct and useful of by means of the purely verbalinstitutional books composed upon
expression maximizing principle geometry for example
should be found to be learned notat the same time either more easily
or and more thoroughly than in the present mode, all
books composed in this subjectin the existin the institutional books
at present existing on the subject would be found comparatively
useless, and cease to be ansubject object of purchase.

That such a state of things without regret or even
without desplication anger such a state of things should be contemplated
either by persons interested either in the respect of
pecuniary matters or in respect of reputation in the
existing stock of works on this subject be contemplated
is not consistent with human nature: and the consequence is if in this
instance that should time of conduct should on the part
of persons so circumstances be pursuedtake place which in all
other instances has been pursued, the object will be toin object of general research
will be by what means the reputation of the ideaprinciple, and
to that these end of him by whom it has been advanced mightmay
most effectually be depressed

But howsoever unpleasant <add></add> of by considerations of
this sort more to whom it seemed that they had every thing
new and useful ideasto offer had been engaged to represssuppress them, no
improvement would ever have been made in any part of the
field of art and science. And in the present instance abouta circumstance
