Chrest Tab.II Particular Branches
I
II
5 or 6 King
Beddoes School
Of this School, in so far as concerns mathematics
the principle or principles may thus briefly be brought to view.
Otherwise than in so far as it is applicable to physics
mathematics is neither useful (except to the same <add>for amusement</add>in class is useful) nor so much as true.
1. That except as excepted it is not useful, as a proposition
at which whena proposition as it clearly understood will be seem to
be identical: a proposition disprovingcontradicting it would be a
self contradictory one.
2. That it is true not so much as true will it is believed
be found upon a cool calm and carefulreflection to be little
if anything different from an identical proposition: a
proposition dis contradicting it little if any thing different
from a self-contradictory one.
What is a proposition in Mathematicals? what is it? A proposition
in which physical existence, i.e. bodybodies
and portion of space are considered in respect of their
quantity and nothing else
A proposition in Geometry what is it? a proposition
in what physical existences as above are
considered in respect of the quantity in figure, and
thereby in respect of this quantity, but in no other
respect.
