Chrest Tab.II. Conclusion Genealogical

16
Answer as it goes
the Table should include
all practically useful
propositions, viz Euclid's
other Greeks, and moderns.
In respect of its contents, a Table of this sort shall it
be confined to the proposition contained in the Euclid's Elements?-
to the propositions contained in Euclid's works at large? — to
the propositions contained in the sum of the works of the Grecian
Geometers? or shall it, in far as it goes, comprize all
such geometrical propositions, as in any way present
themselves as susceptible of practical use? Answer To all these
questions the last suggests the only national questions surely there can be but one, andviz. that which is
implicitly contained in the last of them.17
Distinguishing them
by types: viz. Euclid,
by Romans: moderns
by Italics: other Greeks
by types smaller than
Euclids:- if the types
will thus bear diminution

Yet, and that by a very simple in the verbally expressed Table expedient, let a distinction
be made the construct by a particular type, those of modern
let may them be distinguished from those of data. In
the elementary branch pla Geom in which no be curve but the circulcircle
is introduced let the Euclid's proposition for example. as contributing the main part of the stock be in the ordinary
Roman type: then of the modern geometers being all together
expressed in the Italian types: propositions found in the works
of other ts might be call in the same Roman type
with Euclids as in another Roman of different, superior
of inferior size: if the type could not conveniently be diminished 18
Further matter for the
border, references to the
works made.

the black colour might answer the purpose.

Another part of the abovementioned border might be
composed of references to the original works, on which the
several propositions, designated in the of by the numbers
designated in the Table, have been found.

The influence of authority intellectual authority 19
Reason of these distinctions-
even in
Mathematics, authority
is required as
presumptive and provisional
and evidence of it

is not altogether excluded even from the Mathematics: the
authority by every modern Geometer the authority of every
Geometry, but with a more particular degree of provisionalconfidence
is received of as presumptive and provisionally
conclusive, not to say absolutely conclusivedefinitively and irreversibly evidence of tr 20
Thus mathematics
without additional strain
upon the memory,
would be placed in a
historical point of view

By thea mark of distinction thus conspicuous as well as
comprehensive, the field would in some sort be placed in a historical
point of view.
