signs: in the or say uses of special signs in Mathematics
I. Old established uses
1. Exemplification: viz. of furnishing particular employing
individual signs or assemblages of signs to serve as
examples of the general propositions of which compose the math are the subject
of mathematical language, and by that means the
more clearly distinctly and promptly to convey the general ideas of
which they are intended to be expressive.
In so far as however it is to this use and no other that
the assemblage set of extraordinary special signs in question is applied
the term epithet appellation if unambiguous does not belong to them
on the contrary they are imitative. Thus geometrical
diagrams use a species of drawing: and as im in the
case of a square table the draught of the whole table
in proportion or otherwise in an imitation of the whole table, so the diagram of
a square is an imitation of the principal part of
it.
