in which labour by a scientific person of no mean note, ingenuity, labour,
time and expence (typographic expence) in no small
quantity were actually bestowed thrown away in waste. On the publication
of the then new system of Chemistry which bears the
name of the La Lavoisier, the business was divided
among three hands. The contrivance of a new set of
characters termed Chemical characters adapted to the new theory being at the time regarded as
part of that business single taking the subject of a necessary fallen ex was announced in having
fallen exclusively in the lot of one of these three
hands. Since that time so different in many parts
as well as so much more extensive is has been the culture received
by the field of chemistry, that even had the
principle of the contrivance been good, the application 13

the mind of a learner the ideas of the respective chemical
substances, as that with which they were presented by the corresponding
set of names, as expressed by these general charactersalready and uninvariably adapted
of which ordinary written language is composed.
