Best though of the application of the purely
verbal mode of expression expressing employing principle the effect is not in
Algebra, to add in any respect to the generality of the
language, through that, even in Algebra it is capable
of being used employed to act and with very considerable effect
in the character an instrument of elucidation
seems scarcely to to admitt of doubt. The mean
by which it may be rendered condeceiveproductive of this effect
consist in the substitution of the ordinary characters
of which language at large is composed to the characters
and mode of expression peculiar to this branch
of art and science. Essential as these instruments of condensation are to the
obs accomplishment of the proposed objects, yet to the occasionin each part into
presenting of the ideas here in question they oppose in the case of to
an unpracticed unexercised mind a most powerful and
disheartening obstacle

are going in performing by which the rationale of the art and science is explained brought to view

In the art and science of Algebra branch of
Mathematics two in idea at least two sorts of operations
may be distinguished to abbreviative or condensative
and the efficient oreffective. The abbreviative are compose<add>as it were<add>not more</add></add> but a species
perform in this occasion then of shorthand: they perform
on this occasion, on the occasion of discourse applied to this particular subject
they perform through a degree of efficiency incomparably superior
the sort of function, which the characters of which short-hand
is composed in relation to discourse at large. In so far
as this is the case, it follows that, in the exercise of this character and without
this particular species
of shorthand, as any
tha other subject of
discourse may be expressed
in the their same ordinary characters, and without the use of the that species of short hand: commonly called short hand, the applicationuse of which is able applicable to every subject of discourse
