likely to have any such
exemplification it is also a physical
one.

So far from being useful
a mathematical proposition
is therefore not so much as
true, unless either actually or
at least potentially it be also
a physical one.

Suppose therefore a
mathematician, taking for the
subject of his propositions a
curve of the fiftieth order: and
suppose that in the nature of
things in the physical world
any such curve never
ever has place or can be exemplified:
exemplified either
in any individual mass of
matter, or in the path described
by the motion of any individual
mass of matter in the field of
space.

S all this is wild
we can if we please actually
draw a curve of the fiftieth
order; but if Mr. Bentham
will insist that the Quarter should
have drawn it, there is the moon's
orbit which is not only of the
fiftieth order, but higher
than of any order that can
be named.

That in as one of these
propositions there can be any
use, will it is believed be
recognized at the first word.
But neither is there any bulk
in it. A universal which has
no one particular, no one individual
object contained in it
as a sign by which nothing is
designated a mere empty word.(a)
