The Geographer, when he gives after his manner a view
of the several divisions of a Country, contrives to represent
the situation of it as a whole: he would not
think his draught compleat without a few faint outlines
at least scatter'd here and there to represent its
connection with the surrounding regions. Let us—
follow the example. In this as in other sciences, it—
may be of amusement at least if not of use. Let us
not begin with placing our science in the general Map
of knowledge: a few strokes will be sufficient: we
shall feed it the better within our grasp when we take

Between the several pursuits of man & the Sciences which
are his guides in those pursuits, the hold which the
intellect has upon each of them is one as is of connection:[b] the hold which they have upon the affections is another
this hold is the Happiness they produce.
[b]It is the same which is adopted in the Encyclopedia's at
least in the celebrated French work so intitled which has
superseded all the rest — The other, which is that here touched
upon could it have answered the purpose in other respects,
would have had one peculiar advantage while it—
served as a basis of attachment to the several respective articles,
it would serve as a touchstone to indicate their value.
