The prospect we set out with is of such extent as to
put our conception to its utmost stretch, as we advanc
we shall find ourselves insensibly relieved: The—
strain upon the attention will grow less and less as
the field which from its distant vastness had offered
to our first glances an uncertain and obscure perspective,
brings forward its succession parts in their
characteristic shapes and colours to the approaching
eye.

The misfortune is, that in some of them, the connection
however real and indisputable, would depend upon thread
too tortuous and minute for the purpose of such a plan:
a plan the perfection of which consits in the rapidity with
which it enables the mind to seize upon the relations —
between the parts of it. Nor would it perhaps have, —
been practicable to proceed on this plan, without having
recourse to the other for divisions. The thread which leads
to our own science is straight and visible: Observed—
with diligence and pursued with constancy it will serve as
throughout as a sole & sufficient guide [our enquiries.] and
as such we shall adopt embrace it.
