may be supposed to be as the real value

The pleasures of the irascible appetite have
this circumstance peculiar to them: they
must have been preceded by a pain:which
pain as it seems is always greater than the pleasure.
Those of the may have been, and often
are: but it is those of the irascible only
that must: Desire without so long as it is without expectation
is a pain: but the same moment may have
given birth to the expectation and to the desire.
I am angry— I with a man— I feel an appetite
for his pain: a desire of putting
him to pain— I gratify that appetite— I
feel a pleasure— But I could not have felt
that pleasure without having been angry: if
I could not have been angry, without having
been in pain— I was angry— at what?
at something that gave me pain— There is no
being angry there is no feeling the pleasure of rationing anger upon any other terms.
