2 INTRODUCTION. CH IID DIMENSIONS of HAPPINESS.

Pleasure of any kind, let it have what consequences it will is to the less Pleasure while it lasts.

Of two Pleasures equal in intensity, that is the greatest, whose intensity duration is greatest

Of two Pleasures equal in duration, that is the greatest whose intensity is greatest.

Of two lots of Happinesses (for we must here shift the term) in a state equal in each person and int as to intensity and duration magnified -, that is the greatest which is partaken of by the
greatest number of persons.

None these axioms it is evident must hold good equally true whatever be that intensity, duration, & number: and of two Happinesses in order to our preferring one
before another it is sufficient to know that it is less greater than that other in these three
particulars taken together, without our knowing how much greater no what is it's
precise magnitude — As we have no such Instrument as a Pathometer, the Statics
if one may so say of Happiness will admitt of no further precision.

You & I have each our pleasure: if mine lasts as much longer than your's as your's
is greater than mine while it lasts: these are both equal.


The product of the respective number of Parts measuring it's length by whats its bredth, & that thinkers by that of. When plan therefore upon being asked Who was the most happy man ; replied That was not to be judged of till a man's death ; This answer render'd with more accurate tho' less pointed language he meant nothing more would have been this : , them that whereas his enquirers either took but one of the 2 dimensions intensity into their account, or rather had not very well settled with themselves whether they took in one or both, he vilering that subject with more steadiness looked upon the instances of the quantity
here as incomplete so long as one either of these dimensions was consider'd without the other.
