1. of Physical desire. 2ndly of Lucre: 3dly of compacency.4thly of curiosity: 5thly of
benevolence. sympathy.. 6thly of Anger. 7thly of Self- preservation.
Having thus got two different appellatives, motive
for the real or semi-real, principle for the fictitious entity, it will be a satisfaction probably to see how
the senses of them the two appellatives connect.
A Motive (meaning an interior expected interior motive) is some
pleasure expected good: either positive or else negative. viz. some absence or the avoidance of some pain. This pleasure
is either 1. an organical a pleasure, of 2. a pleasure of possession, or
3. a pleasure of curiosity, 4. a pleasure of self-complacency, 5. a pleasure of sympathy, or
6. a pleasure of revenge, or], a pleasure of expectation grounded
on any of those pleasures. The pain in question is either 1st an organical pain,
2 a pain of privation, 3. a pain of humiliation, 4. a
pain of disappointment apprehension grounded on
any of the above pains, or 5. a pain of disappointment
grounded any of the abovementioned pleasures.
These motives above mentioned principles have each a motive
to which they may be said correspond. To the motive of organical
pleasure consider'd as a motive corresponds, we may say, the principle of physical
desire: to pleasure of possession, the principle of
lucre: to a pleasure of self-complacency, the principle
of pride: to a pleasure of curiosity, the principle
of curiosity: to a pleasure of sympathy, the principle
of benevolence: to a pleasure of revenge, antipathy the
principle of Anger. To pain of any kind, the principle
of self-preservation
By a principle
The relation between a principle in the sense in
which the word is here used and a motive as above
explained is this. A principle is a kind of fictitious entity
