4 Principles of human action.

entity, a kind of imaginary instrument, about the operation
of which is consider'd as disposing a man's conduct
to be governed determined by the prime motive correspondent
to that such principle.

[The] principle and [the] motive are terms things so nearly
allied in their import that they will are capable in many instances
of standing in the same phrases: the difference
is that what is predicated predicable in strict truth
of the motive, is predicable only in a metaphorical
way of the principle. It is equally [usual]
and proper to say, such a man's conduct in such an instance is governed
by swayed by, that is originates, takes its rise from the principle of revenge, and that it+ +is governed or actuated or swayed by, or that it is governed
by the motive of anger, that it
originates in or takes its rise from
that principle and that it is a the motive
of anger.

Principle of public spirit N.B. The principle of public spirit is either the
same thing with the principle of benevolence, or with the principle of
virtuous pride; or it may be considered as a compound
of the two: when g actuated by this principle, it is
the pleasure of self-complacency or the pleasure of
sympathy or a mixture both that is the motive to his conduct.
If a man ans submits himself to great labour
or great pain, or great danger in the view and intent
of doing service to his own community in particular or to mankind
in general, it is either for the love he bears to
that community or to mankind, or for the pleasure he
feels in the consciousness or the expectation of being esteemed
by those whose good-will he thinks it his interest to
conciliate.
