Logical redundancy avoided. Alledge as a means of conciseness here employ'd,
the particular care taken to avoid keep clear of
Logical Redundancy. Putting all general obser- speculations
in a place by themselves: and not wasting
them on particular subjects. A speculation came
across me with regard on the occasion for example of some particular
head of offence. If I perceived it to be applicable
to any other head of offence besides that
in question, I discarded it from that head and
moved it to a more general one.

good more with respect to case more rather with a Synopsis than with a System
is more than I can see. The one is a
twofold division, the other a tenfold division: but
why a division should be more apt to be arbitrary
[whatever is meant by arbitrary] from being twofold, than if it were tenfold, is
what he has not told us.

He goes on and observes observes that a twofold division
such as a Synopsis is, does not determine
the limits of the Science. What I suppose he
means is, that it is not exhaustive. This may
very likely to be and probably is the case with such dichotomous
Synopsis as have fallen under his observation: but
why a Method should be less liable to this imperfection
by being decatomous is what he has
not given us to understand. I doubt that even his
own method, useful ingenious and elaborate as it
is would if scrutinized into hardly be found to be
an exhaustive one. And that for this reason among
others, that a man can not withou certainty lay down
the properties of a thing he does not know, from
the visible properties for example of a thing that
nobody ever saw, and there are and will be ,
in spite of human industry, unavoidably
must be, a great number multitude of plants which
neither he nor any of his contemporaries will ever
see.

Another difficulty with me is how it happens, that
he calls a Synopsis a dichotomy, after observing that
the divisions in it are longer or shorter, more or fewer,
as it may happen.
