4) Law in general

We have seen in general what is the office of a definition:
at least of a definition of that sort of which he
meant his to be. Now let us hear the defi[ni]tion itse[lf]
we will then see whether it be such as is calcul[ated]
to perform that office.

Our Author's definition
of Law
in general

"Law," says our Author, "in its most general and co[m]prehensive
"sense, signifies a rule of action; and is
"that rule of action applied applied indiscriminately to all kinds
"of action, whether animate or inanimate, rational o[r]
"irrational. Thus we say, the Laws of motion, of gra[vi]tation,
"of optics, of or mechanics, as well as the Law
"of nature and of nations. And it is that Law rule
"of action, which is prescribed by some superior, and
"which the inferior is bound to obey."

This So says our Author. This Definition then, take it by itself is this. "A Law is a rule of
"action, which is prescribed by some superior, and
"which the inferior is bound to obey." The rest is
comment. In this definition, the words "rule of acts
"or" are designed, we may suppose, to mark the genus: the words, "prescribed by some
"superior and which the inferior is bound to obey," the
differentia.

The generic name of the
assigned by it, not
intelligible
unless by means
of the specific
name to be defined.

The assemblage of objects marked not by the genus generic name,
as we have said, be such an one with the whole of which we
are in some measure acquainted with. For us to be
acquainted with it, it must in the first place exist: for it to exist, it
must belong to one or other of the only three only classes
